The city was not built overnight, nor in a decade, nor in a century. It took a thousand years to build the city we had then. The city was the work of love of many, who dreamed about it, loved it and wanted to change it.
Centuries earlier, they dreamed a larger city than the islands allowed. At the time people moved from an island to the other in boats as no bridges existed. Islands were walled and boats could bring in visitors only when doors opened to let them in. Letting in strangers was dangerous, but curiosity and optimism eventually opened all doors for those who persevered.
