Gaia could not wait for Julia to return. She attended school in the day but her mind was always distracted. In the evening she would swim for two, three hours in the thermal pool in Campo Vignoni, until there was nobody around and she could only hear the sound of splashing water. After dinner she would light a candle on the windowsill above Julia’s bed and look at the stars until sleep captured her.
