You’ve seen four?
Gaia nodded without saying a word, keeping an eye toward the water.
This side is in the shade, it is difficult to spot jellyfish here, said Julia.
Then come here, said Gaia, five.
The stone bridge was warm and there was no one in sight. Gaia turned on her stomach, holding her head towards the river, just off the edge of the bridge. Julia was sitting with her legs dangling over the water, peering around her feet and occasionally raising them. As if she heard something, she turned to Gaia and realized she had fallen asleep, her head resting on the stone. She raised Gaia’s head and slid her bag underneath. Then she laid down next to her, her head folded like a turtle’s, forward and down in the space occupied by the shoulder, then closed her eyes and fell asleep.
